"The hardest part is always the final binding, especially those tiny curved edges," she says, pointing at the adorable creation.

With a gentle and calm voice, short clean-cut hair, glasses, and a soft light-colored outfit, she is hiromaru (ひろまる), a handmade accessory artist from Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

One day, a customer requested a drawstring pouch featuring a Dala Horse design. This inspired her to transform the motif into keychains or brooches.

The Dala Horse is a traditional wooden folk craft from the Dalarna region in Sweden. Originally carved by local carpenters as toys for children, it gradually evolved into a symbol of Swedish craftsmanship and good fortune.

Traditionally, the Dala Horse is painted red and decorated with floral patterns in white, green, and blue. Its cute design and handcrafted charm have long made it a symbol of luck, strength, loyalty, and happiness.

"What kind of atmosphere do I want to create? What colors should I use?... I think a lot about those things."

Designing these Scandinavian-style horses is the part she most looks forward to — and enjoys the most.

“Thinking of a design and then actually bringing it to life with my hands — it’s really therapeutic!” she exclaims, her voice suddenly lifting and her eyes sparkling as she gazes at the embroidery tools on the table.

Naturally, she picks up a needle and beads, and within seconds, she’s fully immersed in the delicate world of embroidery, sewing bead by bead onto a nearly finished horse.

"I actually hesitated for a long time before deciding what kind of handicraft I wanted to pursue," she says while continuing to stitch.

"Then one day, I saw a whole row of colorful embroidery threads, and I was immediately captivated by the colors."

That bundle of thread, stitched together by hand, conveys a warmth and softness — the true charm of embroidery.

Behind the Craft

Due to her husband’s job, she lived in the Philippines for three years. After returning to Japan, she decided to start creating the things she loved and hoped to share them with more people.

She studied design at university and later worked in advertising at a design office in Shizuoka. Although her background is in design, she learned most of her accessory-making skills through books and YouTube tutorials.

“The little bird logo of my brand was actually my first creation,” she explains.

Her love for Scandinavian style led her to create this simple yet character-filled bird-shaped brooch.

ものづくり

夫の仕事の都合でフィリピンに3年間滞在した彼女は、日本に帰国後、自分の好きなものを形にしたいと思い、ハンドメイドを始めました。

大学ではデザインを専攻し、卒業後は静岡のデザイン事務所で広告関係の仕事に携わっていました。アクセサリー作りは、書籍やYouTubeなどを参考に、ほとんど独学で身につけたそうです。

「ロゴに使っている小鳥のデザインが、実は私の初めての作品なんです。」北欧のデザインに惹かれ、シンプルでかわいらしい鳥のブローチを作ったのがはじまりでした。
